Top-rated shows like "Game of Thrones" and "Stranger Things" are not airing new episodes until 2019. Now, "Rick and Morty" looks to be jumping on the bandwagon, too.

Series producer and writer Ryan Ridley, who penned episodes "Lawnmower Dog" and "The Ricklantis Mixup," recently said that as far as he knows, nobody is working on the script of "Rick and Morty" season 4 yet. According to him, the script for the third run was completed in November 2016, roughly eight months before the show returned to Adult Swim. Since then, though, he has not worked on it is adamant that the other writers have not either.

"As far as I know, no one is working on the show, I'm certainly not. So I don't know what's going on, I haven't heard anything," he told Detroit Cast. "They really take their time. I've never understood why everybody...didn't get their sh*t together and make the show fast, I just don't get it. It doesn't make any sense to me. I'm sure they all have their reasons."

Of course, Ridley said this does not mean "Rick and Morty" season 4 is not happening. It is just that if this is the pace they are going at, there will not be new episodes for a really long time. If his estimate is correct, it may even take nearly two years before the show returns.

"I'm just shocked that it's taking -- we got done writing season 3 in November of last year and here we are 11 months later," Ridley explained. "And then I know how long the show takes to write, let alone animate, so it's just like, I'd be surprised if there was a fourth season on the air any sooner than 2019 -- in late 2019."

If that were the case, it would be the longest inactive period for the show, exceeding the 18 months fans have waited for season 3. Adult Swim has yet to order the fourth run, but co-creator Dan Harmon is positive the show is getting renewed. Per Polygon, he said last year that he was about to start working on the new episodes and that the next season is pretty much guaranteed. He did not provide details on the start of production, though.
