'Rise of the Tomb Raider' PS4 release date: Version still on track for holiday release

"Rise of the Tomb Raider" launched for the Xbox One back in November 2015 and then for the PC earlier this year. A PS4 port was scheduled to launch a year following the release of the Xbox One original and Square-Enix confirmed this on the Square-Enix forums, stating it will be released by the holidays.

"As stated previously, Rise of the Tomb Raider's PlayStation 4 release is set for Holiday 2016," confirmed a Square-Enix representative when asked if the PS4 port had been canceled.

Rumors of cancellation began swirling when Square-Enix stopped giving any official update regarding the game and there have been no marketing materials such as posters, pre-order hype or trailers following the launch of the PC version of the game.

PlayStation Lifestyle points out that the statement specifically mentions the holiday period but not an exact release date. It is further speculated that "Rise of the Tomb Raider" could launch for the PS4 on Nov. 8 or Nov. 15 and this time it will have a stronger push in the market as it will not be competing with a new "Fallout" game.

This is due to the fact that the Xbox One port of the game launched around the same time "Fallout 4" released and at the time all attention was directed towards the latter. This may have led to weaker sales for the Xbox One port. Fortunately, the PC version launched in January and saw much less competition.

Despite this, a report from Gamespot back in May revealed the findings from Square-Enix's fiscal report in which "Rise of the Tomb Raider" was one of their top hits. The report also proved that the PS4 port was still scheduled for a holiday launch.

"Rise of the Tomb Raider" follows up on the 2013 "Tomb Raider," which rebooted the franchise. The game sees Lara Croft searching for the fabled city of Kitezh and its promise for immortality while racing against a nefarious military group aiming to get there first.
