Developer Psyonix has revealed that it is readying a "surprising" update for "Rocket League." Observers and fans are hoping that this is the previous feature promised by the developer, the cross-network play option between Xbox One and PS4.

In an interview with IGN, Psyonix vice president Jeremy Dunham hinted that development for the cross-platfrom feature between the Xbox One and PS4 versions of "Rocket League" is already in its final stages. Reportedly, the studio is only waiting for the go-signal from Sony before unlocking the new feature.

Dunham told the industry follower, "Right now, we're literally at the point where all we need is the go-ahead on the Sony side and we can, in less than a business day, turn it on and have it up and working no problem. It'd literally take a few hours to propagate throughout the whole world, so really we're just waiting on the permission to do so."

Some fans may think of inter-company rivalry between Microsoft and Sony as the cause of reticence on Sony's part. However, Dunham clarified that Sony may be thinking of what is best for "Rocket League" fans, making sure that "...we also are really understanding that it's going to take a while especially given all the ramifications of everything."

Meanwhile, it is suggested that the new cross-play feature is the big surprise that Psyonix wants to roll out in an upcoming update for "Rocket League." The studio has already confirmed that a new update will come out early next month.

Cross-play features are one of the new options for fans in the expanding world of gaming. Previously, Microsoft has revealed that it is readying some titles for cross-platform play between the Windows 10 and Xbox One. Meanwhile, Sony already has laid out cross-platform features between the PS3 and the PS4, and PC.
