'Rookie Blue' season 6 episode 2 spoilers, plot recap: Sam to become a father to ex-girlfriend's child

Sam is to become a father, but not to Andy's child on the second episode of "Rookie Blue."ABC

"Rookie Blue's" Thursday episode was all about fatherhood, as viewers saw Sam Swarek (Ben Bass) trying to adjust to the knowledge that he would soon become a parent to the child of his ex-girlfriend Marlo Cruz (Rachael Ancheril).

The episode, entitled "Perfect Family," also dwelled on the impact of David Sutcliffe's character as "an abusive, overly controlling, super-strict father" to Gracie, TV Line reports. He even dictated the kind of clothes she should wear. One time, he made her sleep in a freezer in the garage when she disobeyed him. His wife eventually realized how his attitude was affecting the children when their son attempted to poison his sister for her rebellious behavior.

Andy's (Missy Peregrym) reaction to the news that her boyfriend was about to become a father to his ex's child was also in focus. When Sam told her the truth, she was tempted to run away, just like in the past when the going got really tough for her. When she came to her senses, she decided to accept the fact and try to find a way to fit into the new scenario.

In a touching scene, Andy assured Sam that she loved him, and though she longed for a "perfect family" for herself in the future, she has come to accept that maybe there was no such thing. While she admitted that she had no idea how to handle such a difficult situation, she would not fold that easily. She also told him that there would not be a day when Sam's child with Marlo would not feel wanted or loved by her.

For his part, Sam realized that some people approach fatherhood in a completely wrong way. He vowed to be a good father and not "screw up his kid." Though the idea of becoming a parent so soon frightened him, knowing how his attitude would affect his kid, just like in Sutcliffe's case, made him realize the right thing to do.

Executive Producer Tassie Cameron told Master Herald how Missy reacted when she knew about the plot for season 6.

"Missy said that it was a terrible situation, and that she doesn't know what she would do. That is what I like about her because she is very emotional, sensitive, and really connects with her character Andy."

Cameron said Missy really brought "a lot of confusion and pain" to Andy's dilemma, as dealing with the issue could really be such a huge struggle for the character.

"Rookie Blue's" next episode will air at 10 p.m. Thursday on ABC.
