Good news for those who got their Samsung Galaxy S5 units from U.S. carrier Verizon Wireless — the Android 5.0 Lollipop OS update is headed their way.

This does not really come as a surprise since the Galaxy S5 is in many parts of the world. A lot of other countries are already enjoying the latest Android update. European countries are the lucky bunch to get the sweet taste of Lollipop first — the update has already reached Poland, Spain, Russia, and the U.K., and it has already found its way to the Czech Republic and Romania.

Moreover, some users in a few Asian countries like Hong Kong and Malaysia are also enjoying the OS update. It is only a matter of time before users in the rest of Asia and the U.S. receive it.

What comes as a surprise though is that Verizon seems to be ahead of other U.S. carriers. The company is usually behind other carriers in rolling out Android updates to its devices. There is no word yet from other big American carriers like AT&T and Sprint as to when the update will be available to their respective units.

Users who receive the notification for the update will have to hit download and select install to upgrade their smartphones. Those who have not received the notification can go to Settings > General > About phone > Software updates > Check for software updates. The Samsung Galaxy S5 can also be updated via KIES. But, as usual, the Android 5.0 Lollipop OS update for the Galaxy S5 will be rolled out in phases. Thus, some users may have to wait longer than others to download and install it.

The Android 5.0 Lollipop OS update for Verizon's Samsung Galaxy S5 has software version VRU1BNLC. It will bring Material design that alters the user interface of the device. Improvements will be seen on the smartphone's camera shortcuts, lock screen notifications, and security. The new firmware update also includes the Recents menu, and the new Interruptions mode.
