HTC One M8 vs Galaxy S5: Which smartphone triumphs as best 2014 Android phone?

HTC and Samsung have brought out its flagship handsets of the year – the HTC One 2 and the Galaxy S5.

Which smartphone will be the Android phone winner of the year?

Take a look at the specs comparison of the top mobile phones below:

HTC One M8

HTC One M8

HTC's best smartphone to date – the HTC One M8 - was unveiled to the world this week at simultaneous launch events in London and New York City.

The HTC One M8 delivers with its unrivalled design, powerful specs and signature Boomsound speakers.

The thin metal body includes the blazing 2.3 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, internal 2600 mAh battery, 2GB RAM and 1080x1920 Super LCD HD 5 inch screen with corning glass shield all packed within a handheld innovation design.

The Duo camera on the device has a unique function – it allows users to bring objects into focus even on photos already taken. The signature HTC UltraPixel camera comes with a BSI sensor and full 1080 Full HD video recording with HDR video. However, many reviewers state their disappointment with the camera, as it doesn't quite live up to the hype we expected.

The front 5 megapixel camera has a wide angle lens with HDR capability, allowing clearer video chats and selfies to be taken.

HTC One M8 runs on Android 4.4 KitKat and its new Sense 6 software. Its connectivity is universal – whether it be 4G or 2G, WiFi or Bluetooth.

It is available with 16GB or 32GB internal storage, expandable up to 128GB with microSDXC.

The Sense 6 will allow users to switch the phone to extreme power saving mode, enabling a phone to last much longer by providing access to only voice calls, emails and text messages.

It is available in three colors: glacial silver, amber gold and gunmetal gray.

Samsung Galaxy S5

Samsung Galaxy S5

Although Samsung tried to renovate the Galaxy S5 by implementing a dimpled plastic back cover to its signature Galaxy phone, the phone is still plastic – a far cry from the sleek metal unibody of the HTC One M8.

Design-wise, HTC One M8 trumps hands down.

However, will Samsung's features and components be enough to overtake HTC's flagship phone?

One of the most important features in a modern smartphone is arguably the camera. The 16 megapixel Galaxy S5 camera is among the best available today, with fast AF focus, HDR and selective focus. However, the front facing camera is only 2 megapixel compared to HTC's 5 megapixel, but whether that is important would depend on the user.

The Galaxy S5 packs a 2.5GHz quad-core processor, a slightly bigger 5.1 inch Super AMOLED 1920-1080p display with 432 ppi, 2 GB RAM, 2800 mAh battery and universal connectivity. It is also offered with 16GB/32GB internal storage expandable up to 128GB and offered in Charcoal Black, Shimmery White, Electric Blue and a limited edition Copper Gold.

The phone is also dust and water resistant, a feature which is not available on the HTC One M8.

The Galaxy S5 also features an accelerometer, heart rate sensor and fingerprint scanner.

However, the speakers cannot compare with the amplified BoomSound front available on the HTC device.

So which will it be?

The HTC One M8 with its sleek beautiful design and powerful speakers or the Galaxy S5 with its top-notch camera and additional security & workout features?
