Samsung may be going in a different direction with its flagship's display features. The Galaxy Note 7 was launched without a regular, flat display variant. It is said that the next flagship, the Galaxy S8, is also going to do the same.

According to Techno Buffalo, Samsung hinted at this radical change during an interview in New York, when the Galaxy Note 7 was launched. Koh Dong-jin, head of Samsung's mobile business, said to the industry follower: "Samsung has considered that it would make the edge display as the identity of the Galaxy S smartphone lineup if the company can provide consumers differentiated user experience through software and user-friendly functions (for the curved screen)."

While it is still unclear, ditching a flat screen for its flagship iterations is highly likely. Reportedly, starting with the launch of the curved display for the Galaxy Note Edge in 2014, and incorporating the Edge screen with the Galaxy S6, curved displays became popular with Samsung fans.

In addition, even without the popularity of curved screens, a radical change for the 2017 flagship releases of Samsung is already expected, since the tech giant is hinting on its plans to get their smartphone lineups up a new level. Aside from having no flat screen versions for 2017 flagships, Samsung is adding new flagship lineup dubbed as Galaxy X, and this time with a foldable display.

Meanwhile, although the South Korea-based tech giant has yet to provide confirmed details on its next flagship, rumored specs for the Samsung Galaxy S8 are already making their rounds online. Aside from having either an Edge or dual Edge display, the next Galaxy S- iteration is said to feature a 4K screen and support VR content. Under the hood, the new flagship is expected to come out with top-tier processor and at least 4GB of RAM, with Android Nougat already onboard.
