Samsung will start introducing Smart TVs running with its homegrown Tizen OS at the upcoming 2015 Consumer Electronics Show. The South Korean tech giant confirmed that all of its future Smart televisions will be powered by the said operating system. 

After the wave of LCD and LED TVs comes Smart televisions that provide additional functions and capabilities compared to regular TV sets. With Smart TVs, users are able to download and use apps as well as connect online and access the Internet. 

Samsung is reportedly moving away slowly from Android toward the Tizen OS platform. It seems that they are starting with their TVs. According to Samsung, Tizen provides the device with more flexibility in content and will enable developers to create compatible apps for business or entertainment. 

"Building our Smart Platform around Tizen is a groundbreaking step towards a much more intelligent and integrated system. Tizen not only enriches the entertainment experience for our customers today, but unlocks great potential for the future in home entertainment," said Won Jin Lee, Executive VP of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. 

One of the most likely reasons why Samsung is moving to the Tizen operating system is to reduce its dependence on Google's Android OS. Samsung may have played a significant role in popularizing the Android operating system through its early devices, especially the Samsung Galaxy S3, but now, it needs to convince the public that Tizen is a good alternative to Android. Some experts, however, are not convinced that Samsung is willing to take the risk and jump to a rather unknown open source OS from the famous operating system from Google. 

Samsung surely has plans of eventually syncing or connecting its devices that run with Tizen. At the moment, this move shows that Samsung intends to control the center of the smart home. Samsung has a wide reach when it comes to household appliances, and it may have plans of integrating the operating system with other household devices making an ideal line of smart appliances.
