'Scandal' season 5 spoilers: Fitz and Olivia's future

ABC

The "Scandal" season 5 mid-season finale left fans with a cliffhanger as Olivia (Kerry Washington) and President Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) went their separate ways, leading Olivia to leave the White House. During the episode, Olivia's secret was also unveiled -- she was pregnant with Fitz' child and went through an abortion.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, actor Goldwyn explained how Fitz would feel once he gets to take in the revelation of losing a child with Olivia. According to the actor, this information would deal a heavy blow on Fitz and it would severely break the bridge between him and Olivia.

"I think it would be, next to the death of his son, the most gutting news he could get and frankly I don't know how he'd recover from that. I can only assume he would because of his irrational love for Olivia. But the combination of the fact that Fitz's fondest dream in life would be to have a child with Olivia -- as he put it in Vermont," the actor explained.

Goldwyn also explained that learning about the abortion is just one half of Fitz's dreams going up in ashes. The second half would be the feeling of betrayal due to Olivia hiding the truth from him.

In a separate interview with TVLine, the actor was asked if there was any hope of Fitz and Olivia getting back together anytime soon. In response, Goldwyn stated that if Olivia and Fitz got together for a happy life then the show would most likely be over while still admitting there could be a plethora of stories that could move the show forward.

Goldwyn's statements also imply that the rest of season 5 may not immediately see the Fitz-Olivia relationship working back together and it may even become a loose plot thread going into the next season.

"Scandal" season 5B premieres this Feb. 11.
