The fate of BBC One's "Sherlock" seems lies in the hands of Benedict Cumberbatch, according to series co-creator Steven Moffat.

During a recent interview with Variety to talk about his other iconic show "Doctor Who," Moffat spoked about the possible scenario when the lead actor of the popular British crime drama decides to quit since its concept is very different from shows like "Doctor Who" and the "James Bond" franchise.

According to Moffat, "Once Benedict Cumberbatch gives up 'Sherlock,' what are we going to do? We are going to stop, that's what we are going to do."

The Scottish TV writer and producer explained that not all TV shows are like "Doctor Who," which could survive any generation since the characters can be portrayed by any actor. "[It's] a show that sheds us all like scales; a show that can make you feel everything except indispensable. It will carry on forever, because you can replace every part of it."

Cumberbatch made his mark as an actor after portraying the role of the legendary detective from Scotland Yard. Huffington Post described his portrayal as more lively and intelligent compared to the other actors who played the role in recent years.

Based on the actor's statement last year during an interview with USA Today (via the Express), he had no plans of leaving the show.

"I'll keep doing it as long as [Sherlock] grows, as long as I feel he's developing and there's stuff we're all being challenged by and that's being loyal to the original stories as well," Cumberbatch said.

While waiting for the announcement regarding the premiere date of "Sherlock" season 4, fans can look forward to the standalone New Year special set in Victorian London. It will air on Jan. 1, 2016.
