"Sherlock" season 4 is still a year away with an estimated release sometime in 2016, but series co-creator Steven Moffat has been giving a few details about the upcoming season and what fans should expect from the show.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Moffat stated, "We're very exultant about a little thing we've set up that no one is talking about."

Moffat explained that the team is working on a plan to top season 3. According to Moffat's statements, the cast was brought to tears when the "devastating" plan was laid out for them, and fans would be desperate for season 5 to come out as soon as possible due to the events that will occur in season 4.

He then explained the major themes of the show, with season 1 being about friendship, season 2 about formative stages, and season 3 reminiscing the good old days. Season 4 will be dealing with the theme of consequences, indicating that it will be much darker than anything the show has done before.

Viewers will recall that season 3 ended with a cliffhanger. As Sherlock was leaving the country as an exile, he was suddenly called back when the face of villain Moriarty began flashing on all public screens and television sets. Fans have speculated that Moriarty is alive and that the character that died was either a puppet or twin. However, according to Moffat, Moriarty is indeed dead.

Another rumor spreading is that Mary Watson may be killed off in season 4. If the production team is set on following the events in the books by author Arthur Conan-Doyle, then this may be a possibility. However, co-creator Mark Gatiss denied that this was the direction the team is taking.

As stated by CrossMap, a lot of denial has been going around regarding what is and what is not going to happen in season 4. Moffat and Gatiss might be telling the truth regarding Moriarty and Mary Watson, or they might be keeping things in the dark to surprise fans of the show.
