Filming of "Sherlock" season 4 may have commenced. Show co-creator and writer Mark Gatiss took to Twitter to tease fans about the development in the drama led by Benedict Cumberbatch.

Gatiss shared a photo of a glasses-wearing skull sitting on a small table that appears to be on the set of "Sherlock" season 4. The teasing caption for the photo has led many to believe that production has indeed commenced.

Fans started to surmise that the glasses mean something but Gatiss defended there's no meaning behind the skull's specs.

"It's just got some glasses on," he explained.

The "Sherlock" creator offered no other details about the photo or what it meant, but it will surely be a joy for fans to know that "Sherlock" season 4 is underway.

Last year, co-creator Steven Moffat revealed that the "Sherlock" season 4 production will start April 2016. That being said, fans should be hearing about it soon after all. Whether or not Gatiss' tweet is an early tease for that remains unclear.

The third season of the series aired in 2014. The new season won't air until next year, so fans are looking at one more year of thumb-twiddling before they see new episodes.

Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, who plays John Watson, have been very busy in the past years with their respective projects, but if the "Sherlock" season 4 filming really is in progress, fans are closer to the detective's return.

According to reports, Sherlock's nemesis, Moriarty, will be back in the new season. While he supposedly died in the second season, Moriarty seemingly showed himself in the season 3 finale via a static image where he can be heard saying "Did you miss me?"

Moffat has been coy about the possibility of Moriarty returning from the grave, although he did mention that Mary will be more involved in Sherlock and Watson's antics in "Sherlock" season 4.

The third Holmes brother will reportedly appear in the new season as well, and rumor mills hint that "The Night Manager" star Tom Hiddleston will play the part.

"Sherlock" season 4 is expected to premiere in January 2017.
