"The Simpsons" is about to shake things up on its 27th season as it has been reported that Homer and Marge, who have one of the most durable marriages in TV history, are about to go on their separate ways on the season premiere of the hit animated show.

Speaking to Variety, the show's executive producer, Al Jean, said that Marge and Homer will "legally separate" in the episode titled "Every Man's Dream." Not only that, but the split will be caused by Homer's sleep disorder.

"In the premiere, it's discovered after all these years Homer has narcolepsy and it's an incredible strain on their marriage," said Jean to the website.

The show boss added that Homer and Marge will legally separate and that Homer falls in love with his pharmacist, who is voiced by Lena Dunham.

"We'll have cameos from the other women on 'Girls'," he added.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jean said that "Every Man's Dream" will be different from all the other times the Simpsons' marriage was on the rocks. In a previous episode, Homer was tempted by another woman while Marge once had a crush on a bowling instructor.

"We wanted to take a serious look at what it would be really like to be Mrs. Homer Simpson," said Jean.

Jean said that Homer's narcolepsy, which is the reason why he's always falling asleep on the job, will explain how he meets Dunham's twenty-something character Candace, the pharmacist who fills his prescription.

There is no word on how long Marge and Homer's separation will last, but it is the latest plot twist set to shock fans of the long-running series.

The news of the couple's split follows the announcement that Sideshow Bob (Kelsey Grammer) will finally kill his longtime nemesis, Bart Simpson, during the show's Halloween special. However, since it's a special episode, the series will reset to normal and Bart will live on.
