The 2012 horror film "Sinister" was a surprise hit for Blumhouse Productions, the same team behind "Paranormal Acitivity" and "Insidious." Now, the company is following this up with "Sinister 2," with the first teaser trailer recently revealed during the 2015 WonderCon.

The trailer is very short, at just 17 seconds; however, it does detail a lot of insight on the plot and who the main characters are in the film.

Returning as the main villain is the supernatural ghoul "Bughuul," a being that haunts families as they relocate and finally murders them in their new home. Every murder is recorded on film, and in each family there is always one child left alive for the Bughuul to manipulate and take into his control.

The second film now stars Shannyn Sossamon as a single mother moving into a new home with her 9-year-old twin sons, real life twins Dartanian and Robert Sloan. The teaser reveals that the home they move into is the house that the Bughuul originated from.

How this works with the sequence of events of the first film has not yet been explained, and the teaser does not delve into the lore of the Bughuul.

Returning from the first film is James Ransone, who plays an unnamed deputy officer opposite Ethan Hawke's crime thriller writer. What the deputy's role is in the sequel is still unknown at this point, but it is possible he may give some insight on the events that occurred in between the two films.

"Sinister 2" is being directed by Ciaran Foy. His previous work includes the 2012 film "Citadel" and several shorts. The director of the first film, Scott Derrickson, is working with the first film's scriptwriter C. Robert Cargil on the screenplay.

Derrickson has moved out of the director's chair as he is scheduled to direct Marvel's "Doctor Strange," rumored to star Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular character.

"Sinister 2" is scheduled to hit theaters on Aug. 21.
