Fans know her as Rosalie Hale from the "Twilight" saga, but Nikki Reed is ready to take on another role as a historical character. The actress has joined "Sleepy Hollow" for its third season, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, the 27-year-old actress will play Betsy Ross in the Fox series.

Betsy Ross is the famous seamstress known and loved for sewing the nation's first flag by day, but by night, she's a dynamic colonial insider, a secret operative within George Washington's mysterious ring of spies. The show's version of Ross is described as sexy with an unsuspecting physical prowess.

"We are all very excited to welcome Nikki Reed into the world of Sleepy Hollow," said co-creator and executive producer Len Wiseman to THR. "Nikki's the perfect choice to bring a smart and sexy edge to our show's twisted version of American icon, Betsy Ross."

The casting marks the actress' series regular debut. Reed joins the cast as a series regular along with Tom Mison, who plays time-traveling Revolutionary War soldier Ichabod Crane, Nicole Beharie who plays modern-day Detective Abbie Mills, and the rest of the cast.

There is no word yet whether Reed's character — who has already been mentioned as a past love of Mison's Crane — will join the show in the past, as part of the series' frequent flashbacks, or in the present day.

Although the first two seasons of "Sleepy Hollow" were filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina, season 3 is relocating to Atlanta, Georgia to take advantage of better filming rebates in the region. The move also allows Reed to keep close to her new husband, Ian Somerhalder, as the actor's The CW series, "The Vampire Diaries," is also filmed in Atlanta.

Season 3 of "Sleepy Hollow" will premiere on Oct. 1 at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
