'Sonic Runners' release date soon as mobile game trailer launched by SEGA

After SEGA announced that they are developing a new mobile-based game featuring the legendary Sonic the Hedgehog, the game developer finally released the teaser trailer for the game that is set to be release sometime this year.

The new "Sonic" mobile game, dubbed as "Sonic Runners," is a free-to-play game featuring a 2D side-scrolling runner scheduled to come out for iOS and Android devices.

Based on the description posted in Famitsu that Polygon translated, the new "Sonic Runners" is a type of mobile game that can be played using one hand.

The trailer shows that Sonic can move himself forward automatically, but to make him jump over the obstacles, the player has to tap the touchscreen. However, SEGA's trailer did not provide more details about the gameplay of Sonic Team.

Other familiar features can also be seen in the new "Sonic Runner" mobile game. It includes facing the ruthless Dr. Robotnik, hurdling through stages filled with loops, collecting rings for points, as well as unlocking the game's playable characters named Tails and Knuckles.

"Sonic Runners" is not the first mobile game that SEGA developed under the "Sonic" franchise. The popular blue hedgehog character appeared in earlier mobile game apps like "Sonic Jump," "Sonic Jump Fever," "Sonic 4," as well as "Sonic Dash." Other popular Sonic games released in SEGA Genesis were also rebooted in mobile versions, including the widely-popular "Sonic CD" that featured an evil version of Sonic the Hedgehog as his own nemesis, and incorporated time travelling elements in the game.

The new "Sonic Runners" mobile game will be SEGA's follow-up to the "Sonic Boom" for Wii U game that was released last year. Compared to the earlier games in the series, "Sonic Boom" performed dismally in the market during the time of release.

"Sonic Runners" is scheduled to come out in spring in the Japanese market, but SEGA still has to announce the schedule of its U.S. release.
