Sony PlayStation 4: Free Online Play Weekend - details here

US Playstation Blog

Hardcore players for the current-gen PS4 console of Sony are in for a treat during the weekend as the gaming industry giant has announced that there will be a free multigaming event.

According to an announcement on the official U.S. PlayStation blog, there will be a Free Online Play Weekend starting Friday and will last all throughout the weekend. The free multiplayer event will start Dec. 11 at 12:01 a.m. PST, and will end on Sunday, Dec. 13 at 11:59 p.m. PST.

However, not all PS4 owners can take part in the event as players would need to log on first to their PlayStation Network accounts. This means that free multiplayer access will be given only to those with PSN subscription. In addition, GameSpot noted, although the fee was waived for online gaming for the weekend (PS4 online gaming requires a paid PS Plus subscription), those who are given access will not be able to unlock the free games that will come with PlayStation Plus. Players would still need a paid PS Plus subscription to do so.

The industry follower, however, added that although the number of games that can be played online for free during the weekend may be limited, there will still be triple-A titles among them. It was noted that players might get a chance to check out the latest DLC for "Star Wars: Battlefront," Battle of Jakku, for free during the weekend. The Battle of Jakku DLC went live across all platforms this week.

Meanwhile, Digital Trends reported that online players might also have a chance to check out for free the online multiplayer modes for other big-name titles like "Call of Duty: Black Ops 3," "FIFA 16,"and "Grand Theft Auto Online," all of which normally require a PS Plus paid subscription for their online features.
