Sony Mobile surprised its fans when it announced that the Xperia Z series lineup would be discontinued and revealed the Xperia X. Now, speculations suggest that the new lineup will be Sony's flagship for at least two years and may also take over current lineups such as the Xperia C and Xperia M.

According to XperiaBlog, Sony Mobile has grand plans for the newly launched Xperia X lineup. Reportedly, the new flagship will also take over the mid-range and above-average smartphone lineups, and that the current-gen ones, the Xperia C and Xperia M iterations, will be discontinued. The industry follower noted that one indication that this may come true is that the rumored Xperia C6 Ultra is now expected to come out as the Xperia X Ultra.

This is what Sony Mobile previously did with the Xperia Z series lineups. Fans were already expecting a follow-up to the Xperia Z5 flagship editions; Sony Mobile, however, launched a number of new flagship and above-average Xperia X variants, and the much-anticipated Xperia Z6 did not come out.

Meanwhile, Sony Mobile is already expanding its Xperia X range. With just three iterations launched at this year's Mobile World Congress, the tech manufacturer confirmed that a fourth addition is underway. Dubbed the Xperia XA Ultra, the new iteration serves as the big version of the Xperia XA, with a 6.0-inch display that designates the Ultra version as a phablet.

Under the hood, the new Xperia XA Ultra runs on a MediaTek MT6755 processor, paired with 3GB of RAM. There is 16GB onboard storage, which can be expanded up to 200GB via microSD card support. The new phablet also has Android Marshmallow right out of the box.

Avalability and pricing of the entire Xperia X lineup, including the flagship Xperia X Performance, will be officially announced in a major reveal at the end of the month.
