Sony's next flagship smartphone is believed to be addressed as the Xperia Z2, at least based on the company's new naming scheme. As per the rumors, the smartphone is will be the tech giant's next big thing.

The purported Sony Xperia X2 is rumored to don a metal build like the one before it and also sport a large 5.5-inch 4K display, which should be superior to its predecessors.

Sony will reportedly come out with a Sony Xperia X2 variant measuring 5 inches or 5.2 inches with Full HD resolution. This should not be any different from the flagship's predecessor.

Pocket Lint points out that Sony has always shied away from Quad HD displays as they tend to sap battery life, which is why Full HD is the way to go on the standard versions of the Sony Xperia X2.

The Sony Xperia X2 is said to keep its OmniBalance design to be in line with the X series devices so far. Add to that a USB Type-C port and fingerprint scanner.

As for the hardware under the hood, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 830 processor should power up the flagship. However, it could also end up being the Snapdragon 821, if Sony started the production early.

Another purported upgrade for the Sony Xperia X2 in this department is the increased RAM. Instead of 3GB, like the device it is succeeding, the flagship is rumored to offer 4GB RAM.

As for the camera, Sony being known for focusing on improving the imaging aspect of its offerings should suggest that the smartphone will get a serious upgrade on this front.

As far as the release date is concerned, speculations have it that the Sony Xperia X2 will see the light of day during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 to be held Feb. 27 to March 1. The annual event has been Sony's go-to for product launches in recent years and the company is not looking to change things up with the Sony Xperia X2. Additionally, this will also mark the year the original Xperia X was released.
