'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' trailer reveals Miles Morales in the lead role; film promises a collection of spider-themed characters
The newest Spider-Man film from Sony Pictures just dropped its first trailer. Titled "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse," the movie will not feature Peter Parker as usual, but fellow costumed superhero Miles Morales.
The 3D animated trailer shows Spider-man visit the grave of Peter Parker, implying that the original wearer of the superhero mask is dead. It then proceeds to show footage of the masked hero swinging and slinging his way through city buildings and highways. On a rooftop scene, the hero takes the mask off and reveals an almost out-of-breath Morales.
Shameik Moore from "The Get Down" will be lending his voice to the film's protagonist.
The idea beyond the film is to touch on the Spider-Verse story thread in the comics. In this story, multiple Spider-Men from different dimensions come together to destroy an evil threat. It also coincides with the movie's tagline being, "Enter a universe where more than one wears the mask."
The final scene also alludes to this, with Morales asking who presumably is a fellow Spider-man. "So how many of us are there?" he asks.
In the original comics, the Spider-verse featured different versions of Spider-themed characters. There was Parker (revealed to be deceased in the upcoming Sony film) and Silk, a female superhero who was bitten by the same radioactive spider that bit Parker.
There was also Spider-Woman, also known as Jessica Drew; Spider-Gwen, who is a superhero version of Gwen Stacy from another dimension; and Spider-UK. May "Mayday" Parker, Parker, daughter of Parker and Mary Jane Watson from an alternate future, makes an appearance as well.
The Spider-verse heroes were not limited to the human versions, though. Spider-Ham, also known as Peter Porker, made an appearance in the comic, too. Spider-Ham was supposed to be a comedic parody of the Spider-man character, appearing as an anthropomorphic pig in the iconic red-and-black spider costume.
It seems that "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" teases a collection of heroes similar to the comics. Sony Pictures will release the spider-filled 3D animated film on Dec. 21, 2018.
