Disney XD has renewed the animated Star Wars spin-off "Star Wars Rebels" for a third season, and while the first two seasons of the show featured original characters such as Lando (Billy Dee Williams), Darth Vader (James Earl Jones) and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels), along with the rebels led by Kanan Jarrus (Freddie Prinze Jr.), the new season will see the rebels finding new allies as they fight the Empire.

"Season 3 will see our rebel heroes face new obstacles and find new allies in their fight against the Empire," said Lucasfilm SVP Development Kiri Hart in a statement released on Starwars.com on Nov. 30.

The show's renewal did not come as a surprise for fans of the franchise as loyal "Star Wars" fans readily embraced the animated series, which is a prequel to the original "Star Wars" films. The show is set five years before the events of the first "Star Wars" movie, "A New Hope" which aired in 1977, and the series features a band of rebels in the early battle against Darth Vader.

The Disney XD show is well into its second season, which saw the return of clone troopers Captain Rex, Captain Gregor, and Commander Wolfe and the debut of the Seventh Sister (Sarah Michelle Gellar), a crafty Inquisitor who is assigned by Darth Vader to track down the rebels.

When it was announced that the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" star was going to provide the voice of a character on the show, many believed that Gellar would be playing a young Princess Leia, but fans were impressed when the actress proved that she can play a menacing villain as seen in past episodes.

TVInsider reports that later on in the season, the Seventh Sister will cause some trouble with Kanan, and fans of Gellar and Prinze Jr. will surely be looking forward to more of the real life couple's characters interaction in the series.

Meanwhile, season 2 will see the return of another fan-favorite character—Yoda, who will be voiced by Frank Oz. "Grey's Anatomy" star Kevin McKidd will guest star as a new Mandalorian character in an upcoming episode.

"Star Wars Rebels" airs Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. on Disney XD.
