The upcoming space simulation video game "Star Citizen" was in itself a massive undertaking for its developers. The game's single-player component — called Squadron 42 — went through a rather successful crowdfunding campaign, raising more than $50 million. However, it seems like funds may not be the problem this time as the highly-anticipated story-based campaign has apparently been delayed once again.

During the recently held CitizenCon event, the game's designer and creator Chris Roberts held a livestream keynote speech in which he formally announced the delay.

The single player campaign — which will be the spiritual successor to "Wing Commander" — was originally planned for a fall 2016 launch. However, Roberts clarified that they had to push the release date this year to a later date. Roberts also did not reveal any new release date for the campaign and only mentioned that they are working tirelessly to get more content into the game.

The project is, of course, quite an ambitious one for Robert's team as it also includes the talents of renowned actors such as Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, and even Mark Hamill. The game will reportedly also contain several components that will all be taking placing within a massively multiplayer persistent universe that is hosted on a customizable private server.

Aside from the single player campaign, the game will also include space combat missions, exploration elements, trading, and mining. The game has also been announced to be fully VR ready and will, in fact, be compatible with all major VR headsets when it is launched.

To make the game even more realistic, developers have added three distinctive fictional languages for the game's alien races: the Banu, the Vanduul, and the Xi'An, which will be created by a linguistic specialist.

Earlier in the year, the game's "Alpha 2.1" went live, which contained a scaled down version of the game's "persistent universe" module along with new ships and weapons.
