'Star Trek Beyond': Trailer reveals Easter eggs

Just as "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" hits theaters, the first teaser trailer for "Star Trek Beyond" was launched online. While many purists are voicing out complaints about the new film appearing to be too focused on action instead of a deep, intellectual story, there are tidbits and Easter eggs in the trailer that suggest otherwise.

A report from The Guardian breaks down the major scenes in the trailer and one of the earliest that comes up is a sequence where the USS Enterprise comes smashing into what appears to be either an asteroid field or a flock of living, biological spaceships. The scene showcases a large swarm of these ships colliding and destroying the USS Enterprise.

There is then a shot of Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) in an escape pod watching the ship being destroyed, hinting that the film will feature the main characters stranded in an unknown planet in deep space with no ship and no crew to aid them.

There are also scenes showcasing actress Sofia Boutella as a white-skinned alien. The name and race of her character are still unknown and the same can be said for the two aliens she is seen fighting. However, they are reportedly similar to a Ferengi and a Lurian.

Perhaps the most tantalizing are the shots of what many presume to be the film's villain, Krall, who is played by Idris Elba. The villain shown in the trailer is not of any known "Star Trek" alien race, although it is speculated he may be playing some weird version of a Gorn. However, Gorns in the television series resemble reptiles while this villain does not.

In terms of plot, the only clue is the villain's lines that state "This is where it begins, Captain. This is where the frontier pushes back."

The line hints that the USS Enterprise has already spent some time in its five-year mission to explore deep space and may have encountered a region populated by aliens who do not want to be associated with the Federation.
