'Stranger Things' season 3 spoilers: What's changing for Will Byers, according to Shawn Levy

From his terrifying trip to the Upside Down to literally being overtaken by a shadow monster -- the past two years have been rough for Will Byers (Noah Schnapp), to say the least. However, things should change for the Hawkins' "zombie boy" come "Stranger Things" season 3.

Speaking to Glamour, executive producer Shawn Levy teased Schnapp's character will finally have some time off from the Upside Down trauma. Obviously, all the characters will still deal with stuff related to the alternate dimension, but it will not be Will needing saving this time around.

"We're going to give Will a break," Levy said. "We're not going to put Will through hell for a third season in a row. He'll be dealing with stuff, but he won't be at rock bottom the way we forced the amazing Noah Schnapp to play." By the sound of it, viewers may finally see him solve mysteries with his friends, rather than being constantly terrified.

A popular theory suggests the next one to be in mortal peril could be Hopper (David Harbour) or Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo). As recalled, the two were both sprayed with mysterious particles in the tunnels during season 2. However, Levy hinted that may not be the case.

"You might assume that but you would probably end up being wrong," he said. "We're dealing with forces of evil that are new."

At this stage, it could be any one of the characters, including the dream team that is Steve (Joe Keery) and Dustin. Hopefully, they will be safe from the horrors of the Upside Down. Regardless, fans would be glad to know that the show will continue exploring their unexpected friendship. Levy could not say more about the duo's arc next season, only teasing at more "Steve/Dustin action."

"Stranger Things" season 3 has yet to start filming, but storylines have reportedly already been written out. Consisting of eight or nine episodes, "Stranger Things" season 3 is rumored to arrive on Netflix in 2019.
