"Sunless Skies" received its first feature update on both Steam and Good Old Games (GOG) on Oct. 25. The update features brand-new game mechanics for players to explore. Included in the update are engine yards, banks, legacies and character creation.

Failbetter Games, the developer of "Sunless Skies," also mentioned in their blog post that they've spent the past week working on bugs, creating in-game regions and trying their best to incorporate player feedback as they continue to work on "Sunless Skies."

The developers also previously brought up Terror, an in-game mechanic they are currently working on.

Set in a Lovecraftian underwater version of London where monsters abound and where humans cannot be trusted, "Sunless Sea," the predecessor of "Sunless Skies," also sported a Terror mechanic of sorts. Whenever sailors were out at sea and away from civilization the terror meter would rise. Once the terror meter reached a hundred, the sailors on the player's ship would start a mutiny that could either be ended peacefully or result in a game over.

However, in "Sunless Skies," instead of sailing the dangerous seas, players will "explore a universe steeped in celestial horror and ravaged by Victorian ambition." They will be trading the seas for the skies, and the developers have been trying to transfer the terror meter from their previous game to this new one, all while tweaking it to fit and having it so the terror increases aren't too daunting.

Failbetter Games also touched on the story-related content they have been adding to the upcoming game. Currently, the game's writers are working on content for the different places. They have also been working on the game's music, design and the actual gameplay.

"Sunless Skies" is currently available on Steam, but it is still in Early Access. The full release is slated for May 2018.
