"Super Mario Odyssey" is one of the most successful games for the Nintendo Switch. Its success was mostly because of its great gameplay, as well as its timely release that also contributes to its popularity. Some people speculate that the game had been in development for a long time and was earlier planned to be on the Wii U. Nintendo denied these rumors, however, and stated that the game has always been made with the Switch in mind.

"It was always planned for Nintendo Switch," game producer Yoshiaki Koizumi said, referring to the "Super Mario Odyssey." He added that at the time of the game's early development, they were already considering the hardware capabilities of the console they were going to launch it on.

Meanwhile, Nintendo's Shinya Takahasi elaborated on what made the Nintendo Switch the device of choice for the best-selling game. He shared that the design of Nintendo's latest console is important, as it can function both as a console and a portable device. "We really thought about what sort of software features would make the best use of those capabilities," he said.

Takahasi adds that "Super Mario Odyssey" is a game that makes the most out of the Nintendo Switch's capabilities. He said that the game "answers" to the console's capability just as well as they had hoped.

Meanwhile, those who still speculate that "Super Mario Odyssey" is made for the Wii U may rest assured in the fact that the Wii U has two Mario games itself: "New Super Mario Bros. U" and "Super Mario 3D Universe."

"Super Mario Odyssey" is available now on the Nintendo Switch. It even had a recent update, with the biggest feature being a new minigame called "Balloon World" featuring Luigi. The update also includes additional outfits for Mario: the Sunshine, Musician and Knight Armour. Plus, it has two new filters for those who are fond of the game's snapshot mode.
