It's official: "Supergirl" will be flying to the small screen soon. CBS officially picked up the newest DC Comics-inspired series for a pilot season and is now the first entry in the network's 2015 to 2016 lineup.

"Supergirl" follows heroine Kara Zor-El (who happens to be Superman's cousin) as she flees planet Krypton on the brink of its destruction. She finds her way to planet Earth, where she decides to live her life as a normal human being, struggling to suppress and keep her super powers.

By the time she is 24, Kara decides that the world needs her abilities and that there is no reason for her to keep them when there's need for her help. Battling heinous foes and baddies, Kara also has to deal with the day job she keeps.

The show stars Melissa Benoist from "Glee" and "Whiplash." Joining her in the series is "Ally McBeal" star Calista Flockhart, who plays the role of Kara's difficult boss Cat Grant. Kara's love interest Jimmy Olsen is played by "True Blood's" Mehcad Brooks. Chyler Leigh is Kara's sister Alex Danvers who is a doctor.

On the superhero-y side of things, there's Laura Benanti set to play as Alura Zor-El, Kara's birth mother. David Harewood plays Hank Henshaw a.k.a. Cyborg in the DC world., one of the first supervillains Supergirl will tackle.

There are also unidentified roles for Helen Slater, who played the same role in the 1984 "Supergirl" film, and Dean Cain, who starred as Superman in the 1993 TV series "Lois And Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman."

"Supergirl" follows the adventures of one of the most notable female superheroes in comics. The upcoming TV series is written and co-produced by Ali Adler and "The Flash" and "Arrow" creators Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg. The new CBS series should premiere by fall.
