'Supergirl' pilot premiere: cast, trailer and pilot release date for CBS' new TV series

Melissa Benoist as Supergirl CBS

A lot of superheroes from both Marvel and DC's roster have made their way to the TV screen through different broadcasting corporations and most proved to be great successes. CBS is now joining other broadcasting networks and announced the upcoming "Supergirl" TV series to be one of its primetime shows starting October 26 of this year. The Superhero show will center on Superman's cousin, Supergirl.

Although Supergirl has less focus than her cousin, this isn't the first time that the character had the spotlight on her. In 1984, a movie titled "Supergirl", which featured Helen Slater as the female Kryptonian, was released due to the popularity of Superman movies during the era. In an article by Variety, it was confirmed that Slater is now a part of the cast of the coming Supergirl TV series. According to IMDB's cast listing for the pilot episode of the said TV series, Slayer will play the role of Sylvia Danvers, Supergirl Kara Danver's foster mother. Also listed in the cast is Dean Cain, who played Superman in the 1993 series, "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman."

It wasn't until January 2015 that the actress for "Supergirl", Kara Zor-El, also known as Kara Danvers, was announced. Melissa Benoist, a former Glee star, was chosen for role. "She's got to be every woman. She's got to be specific. She's got to be a terrific actor. It's looking for someone who embodies both the freshness and the exuberance of being a young woman in today's challenging climate and being someone who can carry this kind of series on her shoulders," said Nina Tassler, CBS' Entertainment Chairman, during a Television Critics Association Tour after she was asked about the qualifications they needed from an actress who will play the lead role of Supergirl. Prior to the announcement that Benoist will be playing as the main protagonist, "Vampire Diaries" star Claire Holt was highly rumored to be chosen for the role.

"Supergirl" will air on CBS at 8 p.m. every Monday. Below is a trailer for the much-anticipated superhero series.
