'Supergirl' season 2 spoilers, cast update: Martian Manhunter will feature more in second season

Supergirl - Martian Manhunter (David Harewood) The CW

"Supergirl" season 2 will be introducing several new characters, one of them being Miss Martian (Sharon Leal). With Miss Martian on the show, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg reveals in an interview that adding her also means J'onn J'onzz aka Martian Manhunter (David Harewood) will get more time in the spotlight.

Speaking to Collider, Kreisberg explained that a part of the reason Miss Martian was being brought in was to allow Martian Manhunter to have his own story and emotional arc in season 2. With Miss Martian, Martian Manhunter would have something he could connect to his home world, something the character never thought would happen.

Kreisberg further explained that J'onn did open up to Kara aka Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and Alex (Chyler Leigh) in season 1, but still had to remind people he has been on Earth for 300 years, spending most of the time in isolation.

"Last year, with his relationship with Alex and his relationship with Kara, he started to come out of his shell a little bit and wasn't quite so afraid to show who he really was. So, in getting to interact with M'gann, he's going to have a whole new person with which to share his martian experience. We think it's going to be a great story," he explained.

As stated in a report from Cinema Blend, J'onn will also have to come to terms with the fact that he is not the very last of his people. Both J'onn and Supergirl will also need to be dealing with the introduction of Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) as a series regular and the introduction of newcomer Mon-El, played by Chris Woods.

Kreisberg also revealed that in the initial plans for "Supergirl" actor David Harewood was simply going to portray Hank Henshaw as a human being but it was during later development that it was decided he would also become the Martian Manhunter.

"Supergirl" season 2 premieres Oct. 10.
