'Supernatural' season 12 spoilers: John Winchester to resurrect?; Sam and Dean to welcome back some popular characters

With Mary Winchester (Samantha Smith) returning from the dead to work with her boys Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) in The CW's "Supernatural", fans should expect more characters to return to the series.

According to Ackles, the show doesn't see death as a hindrance for bringing back strong characters that have made the franchise what it is.

"When you have a really good character, and not just that but a really good talented person playing that character, getting them to come back is always a treat for us, and I feel like it's a nice little treat for you guys, as well. I will say there are plans this season to bring back a few of those, so stay tuned," he said.

Fans are wondering whether Mary's return could mean that John (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) could be next in line for a resurrection to complete the Winchester family once again, reported Parent Herald.

However, one major problem with this scenario is the fact that Morgan is already cast in the AMC series "The Walking Dead" as the show's latest big bad Negan, the leader of The Saviors.

In the last episode, Mary voluntarily left her children in favor of living a normal life, which left Dean depressed after he built his hopes up about having a complete family again. It wasn't such a shock for Sam, however, because he has gotten used to losing the things that he holds dear in his life. The younger Winchester was also just a baby when Mary initially passed away, and he doesn't have as close a bond with her as Dean does.

"Everybody he gets attached to leaves. Every time he gets too attached to something, it ends up going away," the actor said.

Meanwhile, in an upcoming episode of the show — entitled "American Nightmare" — Sam and Dean investigate a case that leads them to a devout family that lives off the grid. The brothers realize that the parents are hiding a huge secret that could destroy them all. Meanwhile, Dean struggles to accept Mary's latest decision.

"Supernatural" Season 12 airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. on The CW.
