"Supernatural" season 12 will once again have 23 episodes, much like the last five seasons. Co-producer Jim Michaels announced the news on his Twitter.

However, unlike the previous seasons, Jensen Ackles, who plays the role of Dean Winchester in the series, said he will not direct an episode of "Supernatural" season 12.

"It's basically like sprinting the first several miles of a marathon, which doesn't really work if you're a good runner. You want to pace yourself, so I'm going to pace myself this year," the actor told TV Line.

As for the storyline to expect in "Supernatural" season 12, Ackles' co-star Jared Padalecki teased that he wants to see more of the Sam and Castiel (Misha Collins) tandem in the new season.

He told TV Line that although he loves sharing scenes with Ackles, he would also like to explore the relationship between his character and Castiel.

Apart from that, "Supernatural" season 12 will reveal what happened to Sam following his encounter with Lady Toni Bevell (Elizabeth Blackmore), a member of the Men of Letters.

While Padalecki does not shy away from saying that his character was indeed shot by the newcomer, fans do not see Sam biting the dust anytime soon.

In fact, the actor knows that an injured Sam is not really a new sight to see in "Supernatural." If anything, the wound he sustained from the gunshot is just enough for Lady Toni to bring Sam in.

"Supernatural" season 12 will also deal with the resurrection of Dean and Sam's mother Mary (Samantha Smith).

For Dean, it will be all about getting closure, but not so much for Sam who did not know his much that much as he was only really young when she was killed.

It remains to be seen what this means for the Winchester brothers in "Supernatural" season 12, but it will be exciting to see how Mary's presence affects their life moving forward.
