While the hope of Windows Phone fans have been renewed when Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently reiterated that the company is definitely releasing another phone in the market, it is now suspected the device will not be called the Surface Phone as it is not really a phone.

After saying in an interview with Australian Financial Review last November that Microsoft is still not done with the mobile phone market, and that consumers can expect another mobile device from the company, Nadella reiterates in a recent interview that it will really be the case. However, there is a clincher: Microsoft's latest phone will not look like the conventional phone that consumers are familiar with right now.

"Will we make more phones? I'm sure we will make more phones, but they will not look like phones that are there today," Nadella shares in a podcast interview.

While rumors about Microsoft's Surface Phone have been around for more than a year already, Nadella's statement has now fueled rumors that Microsoft's upcoming device may not really be called the Surface Phone. As the CEO has repeatedly hinted that it will not look like the conventional smartphone in the market today, it is suspected it will be a new ultra-portable device that is pocketable and will be called a Surface Mini or Surface P (for pocket).

Tech pundits believe Microsoft does not stand a chance against Android brands and the iPhone if it releases another conventional smartphone in the market. Having recognized this, it is suspected that Microsoft has opted to create a device that can be an alternative or a replacement for smartphones and will be fully compatible with its Windows 10 and its desktop applications. Hence, it is said it is likely for Microsoft to promote its upcoming device as "Windows 10 your pocket."

Will the Surface Phone really be called the Surface Mini or Surface P? If yes, how different will it be from the smartphones that dominate the market today? When will it arrive?

Only Microsoft knows for now.
