'Switched at Birth' season 4 spoilers: Heart troubles loom for Bay and Daphne in episode 12

ABC Family

Both Bay (Vanessa Marano) and Daphne (Katie Leclerc) will have major struggles in the next episode of "Switched at Birth." In the season 4 episode titled "How Does a Girl Like You Get to Be a Girl Like You," the girls will be in different sets of trouble, and both need to find a way to move past them.

The official synopsis for episode 12 reads:

In the wake of her breakup with Emmett (Sean Berdy), Bay decides to refocus her energy on school and signs up for a Spanish class, only to discover that the new harassment policy has put her in the spotlight. Daphne learns that her D in Chemistry will affect her scholarship. John (D.W. Moffett) finds himself under serious financial strain as Kathryn (Lea Thompson) makes plans to produce her musical herself. Meanwhile, Daphne and Mingo (Adam Hagenbuch) have a major difference of opinion that leaves Daphne with doubts about their compatibility."

On the other hand, series executive producer Lizzy Weiss revealed that Emmett could find comfort in the arms of Skye (Alice Lee), while Bay could possibly move past the hurt that she had been nursing in episode 11 and the public scrutiny after the sexual assault that she experienced in the first half of the season.

In Daphne's case, being with Mingo was never easy from the start. But now that they could have a chance to make it work, after all the sacrifices that she had to do to chase after him, things may not be how she imagined it to be. Their extremely different personalities could hinder their blossoming romance.

Does it mean that both Bay and Daphne would end up with broken hearts in the coming episodes of "Switched at Birth" season 4?

Also, Weiss said during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that they are planning to introduce another controversial topic in the upcoming episodes.

"Just like with the campus assault story, we're putting stuff out there that people may disagree with," she said. "It stirs up some feelings for people and I think that's a good thing to start a conversation with young people and get them talking about things that they're passionate about."

"Switched at Birth" season 4 episode 12 airs on Monday, Aug. 31, on ABC Family.
