Toby (Lucas Grabeel) and Lily (Rachel Shenton) will be getting engaged in season 5. At the same time, they will be preparing for the future challenges that they will encounter while anticipating the arrival of their child.

In the season 5 promo of "Switched at Birth," Toby and Lily are announcing their engagement to the family, and the news is received with a lot of excitement. Toby's parents — John (D.W. Moffett) and Kathryn (Lea Thompson) Kennish — look very happy about their first born's engagement news.

Previously in "Switched at Birth," Lily broke the news to Toby that she is pregnant and they both find out that the child Lily is carrying has been diagnosed with Down syndrome. He made the decision to accept the reality and takes responsibility of becoming a father to a child with Down syndrome. Toby did a lot of research, and he even visited a center for children with disorders to help him prepare for the birth of their child.

In an interview with Zap2it reported by Screener TV, executive producer Lizzy Weiss shared her thoughts about Toby and Lily's path to parenthood in the upcoming season 5 of "Switched at Birth."

One of her inspirations for Toby and Lily's story is a book called "Far From the Tree," which is about kids turning out to be very different from their parents.

"The reality of the fears and stresses and insecurities that I am sure rise when you are carrying a baby that's different from you — we keep that present and keep the reality of how Toby and Lily as the baby is growing inside of her feel about it," Weiss explained.

Weiss shared,"It's really going to be Toby and Lily coming to terms with the changes that are coming in their life." According to her, an episode will be focused on Toby and Lily dealing with their new reality, while another episode will be dedicated to Lily's baby shower.
