MTV is passing up a New Year's Eve 2016 countdown special for the big launch of the all-important teaser for "Teen Wolf" season 5. The new promo will be the network's 2016 opener as it treats fans with six minutes of unadulterated werewolf madness.

As per Variety, the network's decision to skip its traditional New Year countdown show strikes as odd to many. The publication suggests that its waning viewership may be the reason behind the change of tradition. Either way, fans of the supernatural series should benefit from the shift.

"Teen Wolf" season 5 is becoming more and more intense as increasingly dangerous villains test the friendship of Scott and the pack and their individual strengths. In the first trailer released by MTV, the gang's biggest adversary shows itself in the form of the nightmare-inducing Beast of Gevaudan.

But the monster is just one of the things fans will get to see in action in the latter half of the hit series. As per Hypable, viewers will finally have the chance to witness that much-awaited Stiles-Scott bromance. The best buds haven't been in good terms for a while but spoilers have it that they will patch things up soon.

Fans would love to know that Chris will finally show up in "Teen Wolf" season 5. Kira will be back too. Arden Cho's character hasn't been much of a present in the first half of the season but that will change soon. Sadly, her re-emergence already puts her in grave danger.

On the other hand, Lydia will be digging into Theo's extremely secluded past, which is one of the biggest mysteries in the show at the moment. The series will unravel his dark history and address why Theo murdered his own sister in the midseason premiere "The Last Chimera."

"Teen Wolf" season 5 will air on Jan. 5 at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.
