While fans are still waiting for next year for the console version of "Tekken 7" to make its way to the their side the world, the Japanese arcade version will be getting an expansion, and with new content comes a surprise challenger.

A new fighter will make his way to the tournament, and the character himself is a surprise addition – Akuma, of the "Street Fighter" franchise.

The announcement was made at the end of the King of Iron Fist Tournament 2015 finals. According to Destructoid, Bandai Namco confirmed Akuma's entry via trailer footage, along with the announcement of additional new items, outfits, and stages. With Akuma's confirmed entry, the industry follower stated that is was of interest that the enigmatic character was not part of the "Street Fighter V" lineup, which was also slated for a 2016 release. According to Destructoid, this might be an indication that the crossover title, "Tekken X Street Fighter," is not that far in the future.

Akuma is part of the "Fated Retribution" DLC, and as Forbes reports, the character is also an integral part of the "Tekken 7" story. Kazumi Mishima asked the "Street Fighter" franchise antagonist to kill her husband, Heihachi. This arrangement will play a huge part in the upcoming installment, as "Tekken 7" was previously rumored as the climax of the entire series and will draw a close to the Mishima storyline.

"Tekken 7" currently enjoys a huge following in its Japanese arcade version. The title is also slated to appear next year as a PS4 and Xbox One title, with specific release dates for its global release still under wraps. In addition, it is also still unclear if expansion content for the original arcade version, such as Akuma and "Fated Retribution," will make it to the console versions.
