Showtime's critically acclaimed drama "The Affair" ended with a baffling cliffhanger. But can fans finally find out the ramifications of Noah's (Dominic West) actions in the second season finale when the series returns for season 3?

Last year, series creator Sarah Treem told Elle during an interview at the Golden Globe Awards red carpet that the buildup of the story will pay off in its third season.

Treem explained that they decided to focus each season of the show on the different stages of a typical love affair. According to the series creator, the first season showcased the melodrama that comes with falling in love. The second season, on the other hand, features the darker side of a love affair where couples begin to develop stronger feelings for each other which could cross the thin line of obsession.

She further expounded that the second season will be darker compared to the first, but things will change at the beginning of season 3.

Meanwhile, current spoilers claim that "The Affair" season 3 will focus on the new development regarding Noah and Helen's (Maura Tierney) relationship.

The former couple broke up after Noah strayed from his marriage with Helen and chose to start a new one with a married young waitress named Alison (Ruth Wilson), who also left her husband Cole (Joshua Jackson). But things became more complicated after Noah, Helen, and Alison got involved in an accident that killed Cole's brother Scotty (Colin Donnell).

Noah decided to take all the blame for Scotty's death even if Helen was the one behind the wheels during the second season finale. But according to reports, Helen will feel guilty about Noah's decision. This could affect their feelings toward each other in "The Affair" season 3.

Showtime has yet to reveal more information about the show's third season, which is expected to premiere sometime in 2016.
