The first season of "The Affair" ended in the most shocking fashion. As a result, fans can't help but be curious about what's coming in season 2 and when the show will return. Right now, there's no definitive answer as to when "The Affair" will come back, but show creator Sarah Treem did spill some details on what viewers can expect.

In the season finale, Detective Jeffries arrested Noah for the murder of Scotty. Alison promised him that she will help him get out of it and asked, "Do you believe me?" So, will Noah actually face trial?

"If you think about the evidence the detective is arresting Noah on, he doesn't actually have that much to go on. So he needs more. It's circumstantial, what he's arresting Noah on right now. It's not conclusive," Treem admitted to E! Online. 

What about Helen and Noah's reconciliation? Treem said that Noah and Helen's relationship is just too complicated, as complicated as real-life marriages. 

"She has four kids with him, they've lived their whole lives together ... I think people are not as quick as we'd like to think they are to break up their marriages over an affair ... And I think she does miss him and she does love him, and for me, that's what's going to be really interesting about Helen's arc in the second season," Treem said.

Regarding other narratives in the show, Treem admitted that Helen and Cole's narratives are part of the plan. Further, she also has plans to share the objective truth about one of the biggest mysteries of "The Affair." As for season 2, she said that it will pick up right where season 1 left off. She also said that it will take a while before the past narratives catch up to the present day characters. 

Many viewers raved about the season finale, but the show's creator shared that many, including Colin Donnell who played Scotty, think that it would have already been a satisfying season finale if they didn't get renewed at all. However, Treem believes that there's still so much story to tell and that it is a show worthy of three seasons. 

When Vanity Fair asked her if the ending would've been different if they knew there wouldn't be a new season, she said, "No ... We really didn't. I was just kind of counting on us getting picked up. Maybe if Showtime knew that we weren't getting picked up, maybe they would have told us to change something? But no, we were kind of gunning for a second season and shooting for the moon."
