"The Americans" will return on FX for its third season, and it promises to keep fans on the edge of their seats for its entire run.

In the premiere episode which is titled "EST Men," Elizabeth (Kerri Russell) and Phillip (Matthew Rhys) will have trouble balancing their professional and personal relationships. The episode synopsis reads:

"Tensions simmer between Philip and Elizabeth as they disagree over handling orders from the Centre. When Elizabeth loses key intel, Philip enlists Annelise on a mission with an unexpected outcome. Stan tries a new approach to mending his marriage with Sandra amidst learning tough news about Nina. Written by Joel Fields & Joe Weisberg; directed by Daniel Sackheim."

This means that the couple is having some problems in the home front, as well as in their work as they argue about the best way to handle orders from the Centre. Philip also shows that he has adjusted well with his new life in the United States, but his wife feels otherwise.

Meanwhile, Stan (Noah Emmerich) tries to fix his marriage with his wife Sandra (Susan Misner). But then they learn that Nina's (Annet Mahendru) plane already landed in Russia, meaning that she is alive and well.

In another news, actor Frank Langella joins the rest of the cast this season in a recurring role as Gabriel, the former KGB handler of the Jennings couple. Gabriel comes out of retirement so that he can oversee the operations of the couple after Claudia (Margo Martindale) leaves them.

"We've been huge fans of Frank's work for a long time, and it's been such a pleasure getting to know Frank himself in the beginning stages of working together on the character of Gabriel," said executive producers Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields in a statement. "We look forward to a great season together, and to what we're sure will be a phenomenal creative collaboration."

The premiere episode of "The Americans" season 3 will air on Jan. 28.
