'The Big Bang Theory' season 9 plot spoilers: What's next for Amy and Sheldon in new episodes?

 CBS

"The Big Bang Theory" fans were in for a major shocker in the season 8 finale when Amy called it quits with Sheldon. The tear-jerking episode of the long-running sitcom now has fans looking forward to season 9 to learn what destiny has in store for the adorable couple.

The break-up was instigated when Sheldon interrupted his lip-locking with Amy to talk about The CW series "The Flash," ruining their tender moment. By the end of the episode, Amy asked his now-former boyfriend "some time to take a step back and reevaluate [their] situation."

The more heartbreaking part about this is the fact that Sheldon has been planning to propose to her all along. After Amy broke up with him via Skype, he reached into his drawer and got the ring, asking the Gollum figurine what he'd do with it.

Now, heartbroken Sheldon-Amy shippers wonder what's next for the two and they just can't wait for season 9 to continue their story. One thing's for sure though, their fate has not been written yet. Talking to Yahoo! TV, executive producer Steve Molaro revealed that "nothing's set in stone yet" but his team is already having talks about the next things to transpire in the hit comedy series.

"I don't know what's going to happen, but [Sheldon's] clearly fond of her," Molaro admitted. "I don't think they're done speaking by any means. He's so fond of her – something is going to happen between them, I'm sure."

According to orlandosentinel.com, 14.6 million people were glued to their television screens during the season 8 finale. Clearly, despite the declining ratings (as Carter Matt revealed), the sitcom has not lost its flair.

Season 9 of "The Big Bang Theory" is expected to premiere in fall and Carter Matt is confident that the gang (all of them) will be back for another round of fun and mayhem.
