"The Big Bang Theory" season 9 scored big with that surprising Sheldon Cooper-Amy Farrah Fowler relationship twist. But it looks like fans are going to 'lose' big time when the sitcom rolls out season 10 as its executive producer says it might be their last.

The good news first: "The Big Bang Theory" has just scored some major ratings points with episode 11 of season 9, titled "The Opening Night Excitation," when Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) finally slept together.

The show already rakes in a lot of viewers every week with the current season registering a viewership of between 14 to 15 million, according to Wikipedia. Episode 11, however, registered a number that's remarkably bigger than those figures: 17.2 million, says CinemaBlend, and that's only for those who tuned in during the Thursday airing. The Live +3 numbers are even more impressive at 23 million.

The online source added that these numbers are not only impressive for its count, but also for the fact that this is the CBS sitcom's biggest Live +3 ratings in two years. No show in the current fall season has ever registered such huge ratings too.

While all this is good news, promising that the show can only get better, something bad is also brewing for the fans of the sitcom. Executive producer Steve Molaro has recently told The Hollywood Reporter that the show might no longer go beyond season 10.

"The reality is that maybe season 10 is the ending point. The real answer is I don't know and all I can do right now is go episode to episode and try to make each one the best that we can. There's still so many episodes to go. Even if hypothetically season 10 was the end, I wouldn't be focusing on that yet. That seems like something that would be dealt with way down the line," he says.

But he's right. Season 10 is still a little far off as season 9 still has a few more episodes left. For now, fans can look forward to what else is in store for Sheldon and Amy (and Leonard, Penny, Raj, Howard, and Bernadette) when "The Big Bang Theory" season 9 returns with a new episode on Jan. 7, 2016.
