'The Blacklist' season 3 episode 16 spoilers: Liz hunts for clues about her mom

NBC

"The Blacklist" season 3 episode 16, titled "The Caretaker," both Liz (Megan Boone) and Red (James Spader) will be hunting for something. Liz will continue hunting for clues regarding her mother while Red will aid the team as they hunt for a notorious secret keeper.

According to the synopsis from Cartermatt, this secret keeper known only as the "Caretaker" has been linked to a recent murder of a State Department official over in Beijing. This person also has an "impenetrable safety deposit vault" and the team rushes to find him and his collection of classified secrets.

It is possible that the secrets the Caretaker has are not just about certain criminals but the vault may also have classified or even dangerous information regarding the CIA, FBI and other investigative teams, making it imperative for Red and the rest of the agents to get hold of this criminal before the information is used to kill another person.

The promotional trailer hints at this as it is explained that the Caretaker will start releasing his secrets one by one. The leaks may be responsible for multiple murders across the globe, particularly if the identity of undercover agents or criminals in hiding are exposed.

The promo trailer also reveals that Liz will discover a very important clue regarding her mother and she then confronts Red about this, stating that he lied to her and that there are "some things that can't be forgiven." This implies that Red knew something about her mother all along but has refused to divulge the details even when directly asked.

According to Cartermatt, this lie between Red and Liz may divide the duo even further than before, leading to what fans speculate will be a definitive moment where the two go their separate ways. It may also affect Liz's decision regarding her baby, as the events of the previous episode made her question her decision to give the baby up for adoption.

"The Blacklist" season 3 episode 16 will air this Feb. 25.
