'The Blacklist' season 3 spoilers: Things not yet over for Ressler and Samar

Viewers can expect that there will be more to come regarding Samar (Mozhan Marno) and Ressler's (Diego Klattenhoff) tumultuous affair when the hit NBC series "The Blacklist" returns in January.

When Samar tried to help Liz (Megan Boone) when the latter was at her wit's end, she earned the FBI agent's wrath. Ressler was furious that his new lover went behind his back and even used his computer to aid the fugitive. When Samar got wind of the fact that the Bureau has put a trace on Liz, she contacted her and warned her of what was to come. Samar and Ressler just spent a night together then, and the former timed it that he was in the bathroom when she sent the message to Liz. Ressler had a suspicion that Samar did something, though, as he asked his computer to be analyzed immediately.

When he received confirmation that the device was indeed compromised, he confronted Samar about it. She told him that Liz could die if left on her own. Red (James Spader) had been kidnapped by a group of men, and Liz was alone. With the FBI closing in and her protector gone, she had no hope of escaping capture. For his part, Ressler had been feeling the pressure from the higher ups, whose constant reminder that he was not doing his job nagged him to the core. Because of what Samar did, she was banished immediately and it looked like it was the end of the brief affair between the two.

Executive producer Jon Bokenkamp, however, scratched the idea that what the two had was a one-time thing only. According to EW Spoiler Room, he said that what transpired between Ressler and Samar was not as simple as that. He also hinted that there is more to come for the pair, as they deal with the repercussions of what happened.

"That hasn't quite played out yet. That is something that's going to linger over them and haunt them. The fallout from that will continue to ripple for a while," the executive producer shared.

"The Blacklist" season 3 returns on Jan. 7 at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
