'The Blacklist' season 4 release date: premiere set for October; will Megan Boone's Liz making her return?

Megan Boone as Liz in "The Blacklist" season 3 NBC

"The Blacklist" season 4 isn't far off, with only two episodes left in season 3, which has so far delivered drama to the top and loads of mind-blowing bombshells and surprises.

"The Blacklist" season 3 officially wraps up on May 19 with the second half of "Alexander Kirk." Amid the show's broadcast last year, NBC ordered a new season for the show, a decision made months prior the announcement.

There were rumors around that time that "The Blacklist" got a double renewal, which means that season 5 was also on the cards. There was no confirmation made about this report.

NBC has yet to reveal the premiere date of "The Blacklist" season 4, although the series is expected to return this fall. Looking at the history of its premiere timings, a September or October opening is highly likely.

The world was first introduced of James Spader's Red back in September 2013. The same month the following year, the second season was aired. "The Blacklist" season 3 premiered October last year. This puts "The Blacklist" season 4 release date along those months.

Plot-wise, "The Blacklist" season 4 is rumored to see the return of Megan Boone as Elizabeth Keen, who was apparently killed in episode 19 of "The Blacklist" season 3.

The following episodes made no mention of her or her possible re-emergence, which many fans are counting on, although "The Blacklist" season 3 has been building towards the reveal of the person that engineered her demise.

Fans are convinced that Megan Boone will make a triumphant return and that this will be the central premise of "The Blacklist" season 4.

Media outlets argue that if Liz truly met her maker after the accident, "The Blacklist" season 3 should have made a big deal out of it, but it did not. This further pushed viewers to believe that Liz is not as dead as the show makes out to be.

Apart from a promising "The Blacklist" season 4 and Liz's return from the grave, fans also have something else to look forward to – a spinoff starring Famke Janssen.

The actress is set to reprise her role as Susan "Scottie" Hargrave in this "The Blacklist" offshoot. Her character is still shrouded in mystery for now although speculations have it that she is Liz's mother Katarina Rostova.

"The Blacklist" season 4 is expected to premiere this fall. "The Blacklist" season 3 returns on air with episode 22 "Alexander Kirk" on May 12.
