Red (James Spader) has always been incredibly mysterious – a man of few words and many secrets, which is why fans continue to be intrigued by his actions. Thankfully, in "The Blacklist" season 4, a little bit of Red will be revealed.

Executive producer Jon Bokenkamp teased in an interview with Digital Trends that fans will get to peel another layer of Red's true self in the new season of "The Blacklist."

"That's one of the things we like about the show — trying to surprise ourselves. Once you feel like you know somebody, you realize you don't know them at all. That's certainly the benchmark with Red. He's this sort of chameleon who's always shifting and changing," Bokenkamp said.

"We're getting closer and closer to understanding him, and the 'Cape May' episode was a good example of that. But he's still somewhat of an enigma to us — and that is part of what makes the show fun," he went on to say.

Bokenkamp said that the truth of Red's identity "guides us in every single episode," but it also challenges them. In "The Blacklist" season 4, fans will get a glimpse of that true Red.

As far as how she is related to Red, this mystery will be slowly unravelled in "The Blacklist" season 4 as Alexander Kirk (Ulrich Thomsen) immerse himself into the already complicated situations of the characters.

Bokenkamp teased that Kirk, who claims to be Liz's (Megan Boone) father, will be a very important part of the new season and will help in exploring the reason behind Red's protective predispositions over Liz.

Meanwhile, "The Blacklist" season 4 will not only give fans a clue on Red's true identity. They will also be treated to another appearance of Liz's mother, Katarina Rostova.

Lotte Verbeek will reprise her role in two episodes, but considering how she was depicted in the previous seasons (flashbacks, photos and in Red's vision), it remains to be seen in what form she will appear.

"The Blacklist" season 4 premieres Thursday, Sept. 22 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.
