Video game developers Team17 announced that they will be releasing their prison breakout simulator "The Escapists 2" for the Nintendo Switch. It will not be just a simple port but will have new features added to the hybrid console.

Team17 is bringing the classic fun of the original game into the Nintendo Switch. In it, players will be inmates. They will abide by prison rules and have jobs assigned to them, all while planning the means for their grand escape.

The Nintendo Switch version differs from previous releases in that it adds new themed prisons, which brings the game to a total of 11 prisons.

There will also be new crafting recipes, new escape methods, and various customization options.

However, perhaps the biggest addition to the game is the addition of a multiplayer mode. There will be four-player versus and co-op modes, as well as two players split-screen play.

The two-player mode will require two JoyCons or two Pro Controllers.

The game's release for the Nintendo Switch will be the latest in the efforts that developers Team17 made to expand the game.

Earlier this month, they released a free map editor for the console version of the game, which allowed players to create their own prisons.

A short time later, Team17 released an add-on called "Santa's Shakedown," which added holiday-themed items for the game. Additional jobs and events meant to get players in the holiday spirit were added, as well. These are in addition to the patches and updates that fix discovered bugs and improve the game's performance.

"The Escapists 2" will be released for Nintendo Switch on Jan. 11 of next year. The game will cost $19.99 or £19.99 when it becomes available at the Switch eShop. Pre-purchase and pre-loading will be available starting Jan. 4.

"The Escapists 2" is available now for Microsoft Windows PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
