'The Incredibles 2' release date in 2019: film will take story in new direction

"The Incredibles 2" is moving forward after a decade since the first film released in theaters. Since then the comic book and superhero genre has become quite successful with films such as "Avengers" and "Captain America: Civil War." Director Brad Bird confirms that the sequel won't just be a superhero movie and will take the series into a new direction.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Bird explained that the trick for the sequel to succeed was to mix in new elements while maintaining some familiarity, something that fans of the first film can still identify and latch on to even when many new things are added.

"Hopefully it's the same characters and feel, but going in a new direction. I mean, that's the trick with a sequel. It's repeating yourself, without repeating yourself," he explained.

This would coincide with what the director told IGN last year when he explained it wasn't really about the powers. The film wouldn't just follow the same story beats as other superhero movies and would focus more on the characters and the family dynamics.

Screen Rant reports that Bird's statement is quite vague and does not confirm whether or not "The Incredibles 2" will take place immediately after the ending of the first film or if the gap between the two movies will be in real time, meaning there will be a ten or twelve-year difference.

It is further noted that the "Toy Story" franchise followed the former, with each film taking place several years after the prior entry while "Finding Dory," despite launching a decade after "Finding Nemo," just takes place mere months after the first movie's ending.

Rumors suggest that if the film takes place years after the first movie then Jack-Jack may be the main focus, with his unique powers the main draw for conflict and he may betray his family as he sides with a villain, which is speculated to be a brand new villain, his brother Dash or even a returning Syndrome.

"The Incredibles 2" releases on June 21, 2019.
