TNT told fans that season 5 of "The Last Ship" is designed to be a series ender but the cancellation of the show is too early to tell.

"We shot two seasons simultaneously; the fourth is currently on the air and the fifth will return next summer. We greenlit the fifth with the idea that it could be the final season, however it's far too early to make that determination," TNT told TV Line.

Cast member Travis Van Winkle, who plays Danny Green in the show, posted in his Instagram that the show is set for a cancellation after season 5. He later deleted the post.

After extending the series, TNT has set the airing of season 5 in summer 2018. Eric Dane, who plays Captain Tom Chandler, took a leave from the show due to his battle with depression last April. This resulted to a shutdown for the production. However, all 10 episodes of season 5 have already been finished.

Fans of the show have been divided since the airing of season 3 where some original cast members were killed off from the series. Some see this all well as the story dictated for a better plot progression. On the other hand, others see it as a waste of potential story arc that may be more interesting than season 4 is currently offering.

Season 4 is currently following the format of the epic tale "The Odyssey." The crew of the Nathan James will be looking for a seed that will make them jump from one location to another. This seed will supposedly have primordial values that has immunity to the famine virus. In another scene, Chandler is fighting his way through a fight club.

"The Last Ship" season 4 currently airs every Sunday at 9 p.m. EDT on TNT.
