Although Nintendo already stated that the much talked-about NX system will be an additional product and will not replace the company's current lineup, some observers are thinking that the next-gen console will eventually replace the Wii U. In connection to this, Nintendo might be thinking of delaying the rumored upcoming "The Legend of Zelda" title for the Wii U, and convert it as a launch title for the NX instead.

According to HardcoreGamer, Nintendo always prefers its major franchises like "The Legend of Zelda" and "Super Mario" as launch titles for new consoles. In connection to this, a 2016 release for both the NX system and a new "Zelda" game for the Wii U will put Nintendo in a quandary.

First, some hardcore players will probably upgrade to the NX right away, considering its rumored features of being a hybrid system (a combination of console and handheld). Should the next "Zelda" game be released on the Wii U, hardcore fans of the series would miss out on the game.

The industry follower added that Nintendo has an option of releasing the new "The Legend of Zelda" on both consoles. However, there would be a number of issues with cross-platform development. In addition, should the game launch as a cross-platform title, hardcore fans will most likely get the Wii U version since they already have the console.

Meanwhile, TheBitBag adds that even if Nintendo pushes for the new "Zelda" game to be the NX's launching title, the Wii U wouldn't be left behind. There is already a planned "Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD" version for the current-gen console. In addition, the Wii U still has a number of current and upcoming major titles under its belt, including the online multiplayer "Splatoon," and the upcoming "Pokken Tournament" title.
