The "X-Men" spinoff, "The New Mutants," is aiming to spur more movies in the future.

Hot on the heels of the first trailer release, director Josh Boone revealed that the horror-inspired superhero film is the first in a planned trilogy. Speaking to IGN, he said the next two "The New Mutants" installments will explore other subgenres within horror, which were part of his original pitch to 20th Century Fox.

"These are all going to be horror movies, and they're all be their own distinct kind of horror movies," Boone told the publication. "This [first installment] is certainly the 'rubber-reality' supernatural horror movie. The next one will be a completely different kind of horror movie."

Apart from comic book films, horror has recently been appealing to more type of audiences than ever. "IT" and "Get Out," for example, are two of 2017's biggest blockbuster. More recently, "Happy Death Day" scared up big in the box office as well, beating star-studded "Blade Runner 2049." It seems like Boone wants to take advantage of this by combining both genres.

"Our take was just go examine the horror genre through comic book movies and make each one its own distinct sort of horror film," Boone explained further, "Drawing from the big events that we love in the comics."

Although the sequels may still be contingent to how "New Mutants" will perform critically and in the box office, Boone already has plans for who else will be brought into the fold if the films get the green light. In the same interview, he named Karma and Warlock as the new additions to the potential "New Mutants 2."

Karma, according to Movie Pilot, was one of the founding members of New Mutants in the comics. Hailing from Vietnam, she is a lesbian mutant who had a brutal past, having been tortured by pirates while on the way to America. Her powers include projecting her mind into the body of another and accessing and altering their memories.

Warlock, on the other hand, is a techno-organic entity who comes from the race called Technarchy. He has no true form but can shapeshift, appearing human when necessary. He can also absorb pure energy and repair his body as it is damaged.

"New Mutants 2" is slated for an April 13, 2018 release. It follows five young mutants who are just discovering their powers while held against their will in a secret facility.
